About Us

DAG (Duels and Games) is a college-sponsored organization of Grinnell College. Established in 1996 as Dagorhir/Chamonix, the organization began as a group of nerds passionate about foam sword-fighting.

Originally, DAG followed the rules of sword-fighting and safety as written by the national organization “Dagorhir”, but has since registered themselves officially with the Realms of Belegarth, under the name “Chamonix”. Although the club of Dagorhir no longer associated itself with its original origins as a local offshoot of Dagorhir’s national organization, many fellow Grinnellian students already called the organization “Dag” for short. In the Fall of 2019, realizing that Dag was not only following the rules of Belegarth, but had evolved into something much bigger than simply sword-fighting, the group unanimously voted to rebrand to “DAG”, or “Duels and Games”. Although nothing could fully cover every DAG member’s niche nerdy passions, “Duels and Games” would cover many aspects—Duels of sword fights on Grinnell’s Mac Field, the frequently intense showdowns of Magic: the Gathering, and the menagerie of games the group played, from Smash Bros. tournaments to frequent tabletop role-playing campaigns.

25 years after its inception, DAG remains at its core a group of friends off-the-field, and foes on-the-field. Sword-fighting games traditionally conclude with the game mode “Highlander/Huglander”, in which the group of fighters end the practice with a sign of respect. Elected officers and masters ensure the organization remains a safe place for all to seek companionship and comradrie.
